I recently discovered that you can right click on the solution in Visual Studio in the solution explorer panel, you can add items that will be kept in the root directory. So in my case, I have an application which will consist of a questionnaire and a tracking application. I removed the web.config from each project and instead added one config to the solution items. My directory now has the main Root folder (let's call it ResearchStudyName) inside which is the config, and a generic error page I added called error.htm, and inside ResearchStudyName are 2 directories, Questionnaire and Tracking.
Now in order for the needed files to be there upon publish, I add them as linked files to each project by using Add > Existing Items whereupon I navigate to the files in the root dir, and drop down the Add button to change it to Add as Link.
All done!

Unable to Start Debugging on the Web Server
I heard that a project was throwing this error on attempts to run it in a browser via Visual Studio. The full error complained about integrated Windows authentication.
What you need to do is go to the project via IIS and being up its properties. Then click over to the Directory Security tab, and under the first section, Anonymous access and authentication, there is an edit button. Click it, then down at the bottom you will see the checkbox for integrated Windows authentication. Check that box! Hit OK! And you should be all set.

share a user control across projects in a solution
I used this article to figure this out. Here is my summary of the article, for what I did for a recent solution.
You can keep the user controls to the project you initially created them in, but use then in other projects of the same solution by adding a pre-build event to the project where you want to also use the controls. You can add such an event by going to the Properties of the project (right click on the project in solution explorer) where you want to add the controls, and go to the Build Events tab. You type a command to copy the controls from the project they were created in, to the project you want them to be used in. Then, before running a build on this project, if you have directed the control to be copied into a directory, you do need to make sure that directory exists. For DOM at this point, I created a folder called UserControls into whatever project I was adding the controls to. Finally, after you run the build, make sure you include the folder and/or the controls that were just copied over in the project they were just copied into.

blank solution
Dave & I were modifying a solution the other day because it needs multiple projects, and the default project needed to be renamed and not be in the root of the solution. We started over by making a blank solution. Then I started thinking that it was probably best it we started ALL of our new web application projects in Visual Studio as blank solutions, from now on. Watch the attached movie for details.

browser for debugging in Visual Studio
Anyone know if you can set the specific browser for VS to use when it runs the debugger? I can't remember but I thought I had set it to IR even though my default browser is Firefox.

VS projects - not sending some files?
Has anyone had an issue with publishing a project in Visual Studio, and not having some files get published? I have a project with a bunch of pdfs in it, and even though I added a new one, it didn't get published. I made sure to include in project. I seem to recall manually copying these pdfs over in the first place, but I feel like I shouldn't have to.
Any thoughts?
